Weapons of the Medieval Era
Join Walker Skaggs, head of Rocket City's Historical European Martial Arts school, on our Discord server for an online Q&A session about medieval weaponry, techniques, and HEMA in general on July 16th at 6 pm. This month, our book club is reading The Body in the Swamp by Ardath Mayhar, a murder mystery involving two bodies in a swamp, drug lords, and southern folklore. Pick up your copy beginning July 1st and tune in to our Facebook live discussion where you can type your discussion answers to our live video. Our discussion will go live July 23rd at 5 pm.
The Folklore of Herbs
Join us on Facebook for a video & discussion (subject to change) on The Folklore of Herbs lead by Phyllis D. Light, a fourth generation herbalist and healer who has worked with herbs and natural healing techniques for over 30 years. Learn about different herbs and the folklore surrounding them. Discussion begins July 30th at 5 on Facebook.
Earn prizes by participating in our competitions! All submissions can be either dropped off at the library or emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please submit by July 31st. Winners will be announced August 7th. You may compete in multiple competitions but limit to one submission per contest. Please include your name & preferred contact information. Your submissions may be shared online. There are 2 prizes per competition—the winner will get to pick which prize they prefer, and the runner-up will get the second prize.
Fix a Fairytale
Whether you’re changing the ending, the main character, or something else, give a fairytale a makeover! Submissions should be between 100 to 4,000 words. Please include the name of the original fairytale. Prizes include a statuette of a kneeling knight presenting a pen for a desk and a leather-bound journal.
Dress up a pet (or pets) fairytale/fantasy-style and take a picture! Feel free to include a caption if desired. Points will be given for originality, quality, and comedy. If you buy a costume from a store, please at least modify it. Available prizes: a mythical creatures adult coloring book and a bumper sticker that reads, “Do Not Meddle in The Affairs of Dragons...For You are Crunchy & Good with Ketchup.”
